About The Event
The Spencer Lofts Gallery (www.spencerloftsgallery.com) is proud to celebrate Chelsea's 400th with an exhibit of the ongoing People of Chelsea Project.
Photographer Darlene DeVita and writer Sarah Putnam have collaborated with the Chelsea Black Community (CBC) to share stories that go back generations; in particular, how the CBC was affected by the fire of 1973, and to bring attention to Fanny Fairweather, a woman enslaved by the Cary family in Chelsea in the 1800s.
Personal family photographs from the CBC, showing life before and after the fire, will be projected during the exhibition. (photo of Joan Cromwell, president of the CBC, in front of headquarters, 2024)
